SPRING 2010 PARENT FEEDBACK REGARDING ACADEMY

Are the kids developing as soccer players, learning the game and having fun in the process?

“Absolutely!  From the fall to the spring session I have noticed a marked improvement in field awareness, game tactics, talking to each other and fundamentals of passing and dribbling. It is impressive how they have started to click.”

“The progression in all the girls' team and individual skills, from the time of team formation in late summer to wrapping up the season in spring, was truly amazing.”

“Yes – there has been a lot of coaching on passing over the course of the season and that has definitely improved.  It has been great to see the girls become more confident “team” players over the course of the season”

“Yes, both individually and collectively. Our U10 Academy team has improved significantly from Fall to Spring. It has been a pleasure to watch them play.”

“I am very impressed with the evolution of my daughter as a player. She has developed a sense for the game, overall concept of strategies and spatial relationship that she did not possess during the fall season.”

“Players are improving greatly.  The extra practice time and time practicing with a consistently better group of teammates has helped considerably. “

“I'm impressed that each player on my daughter's team has clearly improved from their individual starting points. This is true for the most and least accelerated players and everyone in between. Playing on a team with similar skill levels is an enabler for team play because the players learn to trust each other's skills instead of trying to do it all on their own. The increased level of passing and teamwork was very noticeable as the season progressed. Player development is clearly treated as a higher priority than winning games.”

“We have seen the girls become a "team" and grow as players. They have all improved their skills especially in terms of passing and seeing the field.”

“The Academy program has been a great experience.  Our son understands the game much better than he did a year ago.”

“I can only speak for what I have seen in my daughter, and yes she is learning.  At the recreational level she would simply run by 95% of the players and go untouched to the goal or on defense she would simply wait to help out.  She now has learned that she must dribble the ball, use both feet, be under control, keep her head up, and use her teammates.  On defense she has learned spacing, protecting goal side and helping out.”

“Throughout the season, the girls also were able to work with several other professional coaches which was a very positive experience in terms of giving them a chance to learn different styles of coaching.”

“Yes – good coaching and good clinics!”

“Yes, the players are definitely learning- both at a skill level and at a game awareness level. They also have improved noticeably in terms of their spacing and communication.”

“Our son has definitely learned how to play each position, rather than just charging at the ball every time he sees it.”

“The professional coaches were able to form this group of girls into a real "team" rather than just a group of girls playing soccer.”

“We think she has evolved tremendously as a player in enthusiastically understanding the game of soccer.”

“Yes.  Academy has provided our daughter a “carrot” to go after to keep improving but has kept the experience fun.”

“Yes, the players seem to be having fun. Our players get along well and there seems to be good team chemistry.”

“Our son is having a lot of fun.  He would go to practice every night of the week if he had time.”

Are you pleased with the Academy Coaches?

“Yes, to all coaches who have interacted with the girls, from Coach Banks, to Coach Tommy, to Coach Rampa to Coach Kramer, the players enjoy the differences each coach brings and as a parent I like the enthusiasm that all of the coaches have brought and the positive attitudes with the team.”

“The coaches (Tommy, Derrick and Art) have been great!  I appreciate the way that they are able to step in and help each other out when conflicts exists.”

“Their primary coach, Derrick Banks, made practice fun while teaching them a huge amount about the game of soccer.”

“Coach Markovic has done an excellent job teaching the boys to think on their own.  He’s developed a great relationship with the kids – Our son respects him and enjoys working with him.”

“Derrick Banks makes it fun and engaging for the girls and my daughter loves to go to practices.”

“Both Coach Banks and Coach Markovic have a lot to offer the kids. Beyond the soccer skills, they relate well to the kids and are good role models with their positive and respectful attitudes. Coach Kramer was also very involved with the teams, filling in when there were scheduling conflicts and running clinics.”

“Although the recreational league is a wonderfully run program, having a knowledgeable and dedicated coach like Coach Banks has been great.”

“Coach Markovic has done a great job getting to know the boys and keeping them on task at the same time.”

“Tommy is a great coach and mentor!”

“A “Thank You” to Coach Banks.  He has been positive, energetic and great with the girls.  The improvement we have seen is tremendous and then for Coach Banks to organize the “World Cup” entry for the Brookfield East vs. Central game was awesome.”

Is the Academy program worth the added investment?

“For my daughter, the added investment was an easy choice. She enjoys playing at a more competitive level and always looks forward to practices and games. My son is older and playing Select. I would definitely say that if you are considering select soccer, Academy Soccer is a great choice. Because it's more similar to select soccer than recreational soccer, it provides a great opportunity both for you and your child to decide if select is the right direction.”

“This experience has been well worth the investment.  While our daughter has her ups and downs, like all kids, the Academy experience has provided her a “carrot” to go after to improve her game.  She loves soccer and this has given her the additional opportunities  touches, the structured practices, coaching, etc.  Recreational soccer was nice but for her this is wonderful and measured.”

“Yes – higher level of competent/committed coaches is worth the money.  I am glad that we were able to find some local tournaments to compete in this year for the U10 girls.”

“The BSA U10 Academy program was well worth the investment of time and money for our family.”

“The Academy program is worth the investment in my opinion. Our daughter will be continuing forward.”

“The additional investment is worth it compared to Recreational soccer.  Our older son chose to stay in Recreational soccer and the level of play and coaching doesn’t compare to the Academy.”

How flexible has the club been regarding practices or other activities?

“The flexibility has been incredible!  There have been so many opportunities to attend clinics, practices, and sessions (3 indoor) that she made most of them but still could get to the dates that worked out.  We liked that fact that if she had to she could go on the Academy 1 practice night to makeup a missed Academy A night.”

“The coaches were all very flexible in terms of conflicts with school or other sport commitments.  They understood that kids are involved in multiple activities these days and did all they could to accommodate the scheduling conflicts.  There were multiple other training sessions to choose from if a player couldn't make it to her regularly scheduled practice.”

“Very flexible, we have had no issues that I am aware of and it was helpful to be able to attend each of the other team’s practices.”

“We have generally made outdoor soccer the primary activity during the season, but conflicts occasionally came up and it was not treated as an issue. Because there were two girls' teams, it was possible to get a practice in on a different night if the team's regular practice did not work out. We really appreciated this added flexibility.”

“As far as being flexible with other commitments the girls have, we did have some overlapping with basketball and baseball, but Coach was very good about letting the girls make up time by attending clinics or joining his practice with the other team.”

“Having practice available all four nights per week has allowed our son to attend practice even during his busiest times of the year.  It would have been very difficult without the flexibility.  Thank you to the coaches for allowing it!!!”

How does the Academy experience compare with the Recreational experience?

“Academy offers a higher and more uniform level of competition- both within the team and across opposition teams. Also, for many parents like myself who coached our daughters at a younger age, by U10 the girls are at an age where their development needs exceed our capacity to instruct. So playing under coaches with higher soccer instruction expertise is valuable.”

“I would say there are three primary differences between Recreational and Academy. First, the coaching is at a professional level. I have nothing against parent coaches and I was one myself, but the Academy coaches are professionals who really understand the total player development process through their many years of experience. Second, the kids get to play with other kids who are genuinely interested in playing soccer. This raises the bar for everyone and the more consistent skill level really fosters team play. Third, the Academy team plays games against other clubs so the competition level is higher and there is travel to the away games, such as Menomonee Falls, Elm Grove and Racine.”

“A majority of this goes to the fact that she wants the challenge, wants to play at a higher level, and quite frankly I have noticed that she needs to be challenged to really get it going.  At the recreational level she could get away with things due to being just plain faster or more athletic.  And by get away I mean she did not feel challenged so would at times be less than 100% because she could.”

ACADEMY 2010-2011

Here is how Academy is currently being formed for the 2010-2011 season:

1)      Members of the BSA Select Coaching Staff view league and tournament games.

2)      Coaching staff assesses all players at U9 and U9G division.

3)      Parents receive one of the following two e-mails prior within a week following Bob Buss tournament.

a)      Player is invited to participate in BSA Academy training.

b)      Player is invited to participate on BSA Academy team.

In the past, parents have been asked to notify the club prior to the Bob Buss tournament if they wanted their child evaluated for possible Academy team options. In the interest of providing the highest quality service to our members, we now evaluate every player at the U9 level and will offer options and direction for each player. Thus notification is not needed.

ACADEMY TRAINING

The BSA U9 – U10 Academy Training Program is open to all BSA U9 – U10 Players that are registered to play on a BSA recreational Soccer team for the 09-10 season. More information on Spring Training will be posted here at a later date.
