Parent Guidelines

We have guidelines for our parents too!

Season

The Brookfield Soccer Association (BSA) runs a two-part season, fall and spring. Your child will be on the same team for both. The fall season starts in approximately mid-August, with games played in September and October. The spring season starts in mid-March, with games played in April and May. The spring season concludes with the annual Bob Buss Tournament.

Uniform

The soccer uniform consists of shirt, shorts, and socks. These are provided by the club. The entire uniform must be worn at each game. If there is a color conflict (two opposing teams with the same color shirts), the home team must wear white T-shirts over their uniform shirts.

Cold Weather

In cold weather, sweatpants, sweatshirts without zippers, or warmups may be worn under the uniform. If the sweatshirt has a hood, it must not cover the player’s uniform number. Turtle necks and long underwear also work well under the uniform. Cold weather clothing should match your team’s uniform color. Gloves or mittens are recommended for cold weather. Players on the field should never tuck their hands in their shirt sleeves or pockets. This can cause injury if a player falls.

Jewelry

No jewelry or barrettes may be worn during games. Jeans are not allowed at any time. Knee pads are allowed only for goalies. No one with a cast is permitted to play.

Shin Guards

Shin guards are required. No shin guards - no play!!

Shoes

Soccer shoes are not required, but they do provide better traction on a wet field. Rubber or plastic cleats, or turf shoes are acceptable. No metal cleats are allowed. Check shoelaces before the game.

Balls

A properly sized ball will be used based on the players’ age. We use a size 3 ball for U7-8 players, size 4 for U9-12, and size 5 for U13 and up. All players should have a ball so they can practice at home. Bring the ball to every practice, but not to games. Make sure the ball is properly inflated before coming to practice.

Practices

Do not leave your child alone at the field before practice. Players should be picked up promptly at the end of practice. Coaches will not leave your child without adult supervision after practice. Please remember the coaches are volunteers and also have families and other obligations. Players should bring a soccer ball and water to each practice.

Canceling Practices

If a practice is canceled due to rain or for any other reason, the coach or manager will call to let you know. They will also let you know if a make-up practice will be held. When possible, the team phone chain will be used.

Playing Time

Each child who comes to practice regularly or who has an excused absence is guaranteed to play at least one half of each game. It is important that each child be at practice to develop team playing skills and team spirit. Sometimes absences are unavoidable. If your child cannot attend a practice or a game, please call the coach or manager, so that plans can be made accordingly.

Pre-Game

On game days, please have your child arrive 20 minutes before the start of the game. This is important so everyone can stretch, do warmup drills, and prepare mentally.

Canceling Games

Soccer games are played in the rain, so players should report to the field unless notified of a cancellation. Games are canceled by the referee, not by the coaches. You will be notified on the field if an individual game will be canceled by the referee.

Club Cancellation

The club may, under certain conditions, cancel an entire day’s schedule. Coaches and managers will be notified of a cancellation by their division director, and they will in turn notify you. Club cancellations are also broadcast on Warner Cable and announced on the soccer office answering machine.

Called Games

The referee will call a game in progress due to lightning or darkness. If the game is called during the first half, the game will be replayed. If it is called anytime after the start of the second half (even if only a minute has been played), it is considered a full game and the score at that time will stand.

Snacks and Water

A schedule for snacks and water for game days will be published by the team manager. When it is your turn, please bring two gallons of cold water, cups, and a bag for trash to the game. The family responsible for water should also bring a post game snack for each child.

Picture Day

Picture day is scheduled for early in the fall season. Team and individual pictures will be taken. Your team manager will inform you of the details as soon as they are available. Picture day will be held rain or shine.

Raffle / Fundraiser

A fundraiser will be held in the fall to raise funds for development and maintenance of the soccer park. Details will be provided by your manager during the season.

Results

Game results and team standings are recorded and kept for all teams at U8 and older. They are used to seed teams for the annual Bob Buss Tournament held in the spring. Season champions are recognized, as are tournaments champions. U6 and U7 teams play exhibition games as part of the club tournament in spring.

Referees

All BSA league games have licensed referees certified by the Waukesha County Referee Unit. The decision of the referee in soccer is final.

Assistant Referee / Linesmen

In most BSA games the linesman will be parent volunteers. These volunteer linesmen may only indicate when the ball has gone out of play. The center referee makes all other calls. If you are asked to be a linesman, please remain as neutral as possible and support the decisions of the referee.

Respect Referees

In many cases, the referees are young people, sometimes only 2 or 3 years older than your child. This is a learning experience for them, and there is a mentor program in place to help them improve as referees. Please treat these young people with the respect which you would want your own child to be treated.

Sideline Behavior

Remember, your child is playing soccer to have fun. Encourage them to do their personal best and set a positive example of good sportsmanship. Your conduct at practices and during their games will be the example they will follow. By all means, cheer on your player and the team, but leave the coaching to the coaches.

Spectators

All parents and other spectators will sit on the same side of the field. Teams and coaches will be on the other side of the field. Spectators may sit no closer than six yards from the touchline. Parents are also reminded to keep other children away from the touchline. This area is for the linesmen to move in, and for players to safely play balls near the touchline. No parents or spectators are allowed behind the goal.

Unruly Spectators

Law V in soccer gives referees the authority to stop or terminate a game because of spectator interference. BSA also claims the authority to bar unruly spectators from their soccer matches. This is extremely rare, however, it will be done if necessary.

Concerns

If you have a concern about rules or club policies, please speak with your child’s coach after the game or practice, or contact your division director. A complete guide to BSA policies can be found in the Parent Handbook, which can be obtained from the Soccer Office.
